How to Calculate Hourly to Annual Salary
Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then multiply by the number of weeks per year. The formula is: Annual = Hourly × Hours/Week × Weeks/Year.
Standard Full-Time Calculation
For a standard full-time job (40 hours/week, 52 weeks/year), multiply your hourly rate by 2,080 to get your annual salary. For example, $50/hour × 2,080 = $104,000/year.
Freelance Considerations
- Vacation time is unpaid — Unlike traditional employment, freelancers don't get paid time off
- Non-billable hours — Admin, marketing, and professional development eat into billable time
- Self-employment tax — Freelancers pay both employer and employee portions of Social Security/Medicare
- No benefits — Health insurance, retirement matching, and other benefits come out of your rate
Fair Rate Guidelines
A common rule of thumb: to match a W-2 employee's compensation, freelancers should charge 1.5-2x the equivalent hourly rate. This accounts for taxes, benefits, overhead, and unpaid time.
